Becoming a man is not a matter of acquiring a set of certain manly life skills; it is an inherent aspect of one’s identity determined by biology. However, honing essential life skills is what sets apart those who embrace the qualities of a real and remarkable man.
While societal notions of manhood may have evolved, there are enduring principles and skills for life that remain relevant even in today’s world. While there is no rigid guidebook with strict do’s and don’ts to follow religiously, understanding the significance of these principles and embracing valuable advice can profoundly enhance your journey towards manhood.
These principles encompass vital life skills that transcend gender, offering practical tools for personal growth. Every individual’s path may be unique, but recognizing the importance of these skills and actively cultivating them can have a transformative impact on your development as a man.
So, while being a man is not a skill that can be acquired, nurturing essential life skills and embodying the qualities that define a real man empowers you to navigate life with confidence and purpose. These skills for life shape your journey towards a fulfilling and meaningful existence.
Some of these life skills may seem trivial and random, but within each and every one of them lies great potential waiting to be used to make you a better man.
1. Say NO
Should saying NO really be on the list of life skills you should acquire?
I believe it should.
Being able to say NO without feeling guilty and selfish is of paramount importance.
Anyone who expects you to always say yes clearly doesn’t have your best interest at heart.
We say yes to please people we care about, we say yes to avoid conflict, and there’s nothing wrong with that. What’s wrong, though, is saying yes when every fiber of your body is screaming NO.
Avoid letting emotional blackmailers get away with it.
Always say NO when you feel it’s the right thing to say.
You have the right to do it. This is one of the most detrimental among all other skills for life.
2. Time Management

We all know what to do and how to do it, and we probably have a list of reasons why we can’t do whatever is that we want to do, but the only thing that matters is whether we do it or not.
Knowing is not enough, you must take action.
One of the most common skills for life many men struggle with on the way to achieving their goals is poor time management. Not a lot of people give it the proper attention it deserves, but I believe it to be one of the most crucial life skills one has to master in order to succeed in life.
“I’ve found that luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances, Be more active, Show up more often.”

“If you would be wealthy, think of saving as well as getting.”
Benjamin Franklin
The ability to manage money effectively is an essential life skill for everyone, regardless of gender. Understanding financial principles, saving, and making wise investment decisions can pave the way to financial security and freedom.
4. Treat others with respect
You cannot expect others to treat you with respect if you don’t reciprocate. And at the of the day, being disrespectful is just being an a$$hole said more politely.
I’m sure you don’t want to be an a$$hole.
Reciprocity plays a vital role in earning and receiving respect. Treating others with respect sets the foundation for healthy relationships and a harmonious society. It’s important to remember that being disrespectful towards others only reflects poorly on oneself. As a man, it’s crucial to aspire to kindness, empathy, and treating others with the respect they deserve.
5. Be a good listener
Being a good listener doesn’t mean that you have to remember random information and pull it out of your sleeve when necessary.
It means that you have to listen, truly listen to what’s being said to you.
Be interested, engage in a meaningful conversation, and try to understand the person you’re talking to.
6. Keep the chivalry alive

Buy her flowers. Open the door for her. Walk on the street side of the sidewalk. Pay on the first date.
Be a gentleman. It’s not that hard.
Simple acts of chivalry such as buying flowers, opening doors, walking on the street side of the sidewalk, and paying on the first date demonstrate thoughtfulness and respect towards others. Embracing these gestures doesn’t require much effort, but they can leave a lasting impression and contribute to a positive and courteous demeanor.
7. Measure your words
“The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.”
Dorothy Nevill
Dorothy Nevill once remarked, “The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.” The ability to choose our words wisely is a life skill that can enhance our relationships and prevent unnecessary conflicts. Taking a moment to consider the impact of our words before speaking can make a significant difference in how others perceive us and how well we communicate.
8. Make a good first impression
Upon meeting somebody for the first time, we’re being judged based on a number of factors, such as voice, style, body language, etc.
It takes 7 seconds to make a first impression. After that, We tend to stick to our initial impressions and find it very difficult to change our opinion, even when presented with lots of evidence to the contrary.
It goes without saying just how important it is to be aware of how we come across to others during a first meeting.
Once we realize our strengths and weaknesses, we can adjust them accordingly, in order to make sure we always leave a killer first impression.

“The man who does not read good books is no better than the man who can’t.”

A firm handshake is an essential life skill that reflects confidence and professionalism. It communicates respect, trustworthiness, and establishes a positive impression in professional and personal settings. A weak or limp handshake can leave a negative impression, so it’s important to practice and perfect this gesture.
11. Be assertive
Assertiveness is a valuable life skill that allows individuals to express their thoughts, needs, and boundaries effectively. By being assertive, one can communicate confidently while maintaining respect for oneself and others. It’s about finding the right balance between passivity and aggression, empowering individuals to navigate relationships and situations with clarity and confidence.
12. Make decisions promptly

“Those who reach decisions promptly and definitely, know what they want, and generally, get it. The leaders in every walk of life decide quickly, and firmly. That is the major reason why they are leaders. The world has a habit of making room for the person whose words and actions show they know where they are going.”
Napoleon Hill
The ability to make decisions promptly and with conviction is a hallmark of true leaders. Those who know what they want and act decisively tend to achieve their goals. Napoleon Hill aptly observed that the world makes room for individuals who demonstrate a clear sense of direction through their words and actions.
Indecisive men usually struggle in many areas of life. And they usually need to invest time in working on their personal growth. Many of us, gentlemen, allow the opportunities to go by, without acting on them, and no matter what anyone says, the main reason is poor self-image. I’m sure of that.
That’s exactly why I urge you to do something about it.
